rebuild a 1977 buick regal carburater?
If I have a craftsman 117pc mechanics tool set, should I have all the tools I need to take apart and rebuild my dads carburater? This would make him very happy, we are original owners, and if we cannot fix it(we cannot afford someone to do it), he will be forced to sell it, that would suck. were could I get the kit to rebuild it(the parts).
no offense intended, but if you have to ask this question, you don’t have the experience level neccessary to rebuild a carb. these are VERY intricate pieces of equipment, with too many things that have to be installed EXACTLY right, and many small pieces that can be bent, broken or otherwise installed incorrectly and keep it from working whenever you reinstall it.
you can buy the kit at any auto parts store, and there are books designed to walk you through the rebuild process that can be bought at the same place, but after having rebuilt many carbs in my day, i can assure you it is still a daunting task even for someone of my experience level.
you will need, in addition to all of your other tools, a feeler gauge and some type of plastigauge or other small ruler graduated in 32nds to set your float level and to make sure that all tolerances are adhered to in the reassembly process….and a gallon at least of carb and parts cleaner to soak the parts in for 24 hours to make sure they are spotless before reassembly.
i would highly advise against an amatuer trying to do a job like this, but if you must, take your time, and read the book and study the illustrations. the rebuild kit is only going to supply you with an exploded diagram of the parts, no instructions. the lit suppliers already know that if you are going to tackle a job like this that you should already know what you are doing.
as a cheaper, easier, and better alternative for you, i would suggest buying a used carb from a junkyard that you don’t have to rebuild and can just bolt on as a replacement. the cost will be far less than trying to rebuild the unit and having to take it to the shop afterwards anyway
